I completely agree.
The fact of life is... many people of Shirley's generation grew up in a racist environment and/or heard many stories of racism from their parents.
All ethnicities included.... most people have learned to get over their initial racist thoughts that they learned in childhood (some have not). Shirley was related a story about an incident that helped her get over her racist inclinations.
It is commendable, and something that most people don't have the morale fortitude to stand up and admit to. Most people simply want to state "No I am not racist, and I never have been!" which is incorrect in almost all situations.
Studies have shown that children have racist inclinations, even if they are not taught that by their family. (I did a quick search and found one for ya... there are others I just ain't taking the time to find them: http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2010/images/05/13/expanded_results_methods_cnn.pdf)
Psychology teaches us that humans are more inclined to "like" those that look like them, and to "dislike" those that do not. This is true of race, height, body weight.. etc etc. Overcoming that, is a developmental task that each individual must complete at some point in their life.
