Kali is one of the first services to offer online gaming versus another person on the net. They have been there since I think 94-95 and started a bit after another site I can't remember the name of, but Kali was far more popular at that time. After a while Mplayer started out with the Graphics and all the fancy stuff which got a lot more started after they where supporting quite a few games directly through the disks. Another site like Mplayer (Gamespy bought them) was TEN (Skipped all games but classics now and known as Pogo now) that was a paysite, and aimed for US. Westwood also offered Wchat, but that was only for Red Alert in the beginning, so only one game.

With Kali you can set anything up to play versus a friend, its hard to find a game you can't configure to run with Kali, which made it very popular for quite some time. Then more and more of the new games coming out started offering build in matchmakers and chats so new players didn't go to Kali anymore and they ended up going down, but was recently bought back of the original owner Jay and I not sure of the plan with it now, but their way of setting things up vs other players is quite awesome compared to many of the others.

Kali is a one time fee for a lifetime license, that part also took players away and at the same time dragged in more serious gamers, which I know from myself have costed tons of hours of playing Red Alert, Descent, Warcraft, Railroad Tycoon and many others.
